Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is a rather undervalued country, and I thought it would be interesting to write a short article about what you have to know about this country. Here are the 5 main basic points about Burkina Faso :

- Burkina Faso is a Western African country and is surrounded by Mali, Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Ivory Coast. Its capital is Ouagadougou. The name "Burkina Faso" means "land of upright people", and is its official name since 1984.

- Burkina Faso has an area of 274 200 km2 , which is a bit less than the half of France's area (675 417km2), and the population is estimated around 16 millions inhabitants (Burkinabè) in 2010 (47.5% would be between 0 and 14 year old and 49.5% would be between 15 and 64 year old). Because of its geographical position (south of Sahara), the amount of water is negligible, however from June to September, rain happens frequently, especially in the south and south west of the country. Population is devided into 60 ethnic groups.

- It is still one of the 10 countries which are the less developed in the world with a HDI of 0.343 in 2012 (max : 1, France : ~0.8).

- Its President is Blaise Compaoré.

- The official language is French, but there are also many national languages as Mooré, Dioula and Fulfuldé.
